The women’s semi-final round featured Serena Williams vs. Li Na, and Justine Henin vs. Zheng Jie. Serena won 7-6, 7-6, while Henin won 6-1, 6-0 in 51 minutes, the shortest match of the tournament.
Both Na and Jie are Chinese, and it’s good to see China begin to develop tennis talent that can compete with the best in the world. But I find it funny to compare two potential finals out of those semi-final four. I’m very excited to see Serena Williams play newly-unretired Justin Henin, as their game styles are fun to watch and there are some great story lines to follow.
By contrast, a Li Na vs. Zheng Jie final might have been the least-watched and least-covered Australian open final in the history of the tournament. Except in China, where it would have been widely covered. But on sports center Saturday morning, I’d bet a South Carolina vs. Boston College basketball game would get more air time than that final.
